Dinner Party with Johnny Town-Mouse
A Simple But Elegant Spread for Young Chefs, Inspired by Beatrix Potter
I have always loved a splendid tea party.
That might explain why Beatrix Potter’s The Tale of Johnny Town-Mouse has always been one of my favorite children’s books, and one that I couldn’t wait to introduce to my kids. In it, Potter beautifully retells and so charmingly illustrates a quite ancient tale, dating all the way back to Aesop and Horace, of the country mouse and the town mouse. And she does it with such pizzazz that I have always dreamt of coming up with just the right sort of elegant menu, suitable for even the tiniest chefs, for the quite debonair mouse dinner party that happens at the heart of it.
This week, as the promise of summer and easy al fresco dining beckons, I finally have the pleasure of bringing that dinner party to life. Read on for my deluxe Potter-inspired mouse menu and ideas about how to craft your own equally memorable and delicious one.
